Former IBF welterweight champion, Joshua Clottey, has advised Richard Commey to shift his focus towards maximizing his earnings rather than pursuing another title in boxing. Clottey suggests that Commey’s prospects of winning another championship are slim, given his recent performance and upcoming retirement.
Commey, who has not secured a victory in his last three fights since losing the WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title to Vasiliy Lomachenko in December 2021, suffered another setback with a knockout defeat to Jose Ramirez in his most recent bout.
Clottey attributes Commey’s struggle to bounce back to his previous defeat against Lomachenko, which appears to have affected his performance and confidence. Recognizing the challenges of the sport, Clottey advises Commey to prioritize securing a comfortable financial future before contemplating retirement, considering the potential difficulties of reclaiming a title.
Commenting on the state of boxing in Ghana, Clottey expresses a pessimistic view, citing the absence of proper planning and investment as key issues. He highlights a lack of progression from the amateur level, which should ideally serve as the foundation for the sport’s development. Unlike the well-structured training and preparation regimens observed in national football teams, Clottey notes that young boxers are often assembled hastily before competitions, which hampers their overall growth and potential.
Clottey’s insights shed light on both the individual career decisions of Richard Commey and the broader challenges faced by the boxing landscape in Ghana.
